Dr. Monika Streule

Moni­ka Streu­le is an urban scho­lar and lives in Zürich. She is rese­ar­ching and tea­ching at the Chair of Socio­lo­gy from the Depart­ment of Archi­tec­tu­re of ETH Zürich. Her rese­arch inte­rests are the social pro­duc­tion of space, urba­niza­ti­on pro­ces­ses, and qua­li­ta­ti­ve, cri­ti­cal and reflec­ti­ve methods of urban stu­dies. Curr­ent­ly she focu­ses on ques­ti­ons of urban deve­lo­p­ment in Hava­na, com­pa­ra­ti­ve urban stu­dies and a rela­tio­nal under­stan­ding of ter­ri­to­ry in a post- and deco­lo­ni­al perspective.

In April 2016, she obtai­ned her Ph.D. at ETH Zürich for her the­sis on metro­po­li­tan urba­niza­ti­on pro­ces­ses of Mexi­co City. For this eth­no­gra­phic rese­arch at such an unu­su­al metro­po­li­tan sca­le, she deve­lo­ps, appli­es and dis­cus­ses novel empi­ri­cal stra­te­gies for urban stu­dies. She was a visi­ting rese­ar­cher at the Natio­nal Auto­no­mous Uni­ver­si­ty of Mexi­co UNAM in 2005 and 2013. After recei­ving her MA in Anthro­po­lo­gy, Socio­lo­gy and Poli­ti­cal Sci­en­ces from the Uni­ver­si­ty of Zürich UZH, con­duc­ting a rese­arch on social impacts of urban trans­for­ma­ti­on pro­ces­ses in the His­to­ric Cen­ter of Mexi­co City, sin­ce 2009 she is working for the Facul­ty of Archi­tec­tu­re of ETH Zürich.
