Monika Streule is an urban scholar and lives in Zürich. She is researching and teaching at the Chair of Sociology from the Department of Architecture of ETH Zürich. Her research interests are the social production of space, urbanization processes, and qualitative, critical and reflective methods of urban studies. Currently she focuses on questions of urban development in Havana, comparative urban studies and a relational understanding of territory in a post- and decolonial perspective.
In April 2016, she obtained her Ph.D. at ETH Zürich for her thesis on metropolitan urbanization processes of Mexico City. For this ethnographic research at such an unusual metropolitan scale, she develops, applies and discusses novel empirical strategies for urban studies. She was a visiting researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico UNAM in 2005 and 2013. After receiving her MA in Anthropology, Sociology and Political Sciences from the University of Zürich UZH, conducting a research on social impacts of urban transformation processes in the Historic Center of Mexico City, since 2009 she is working for the Faculty of Architecture of ETH Zürich.
